What this book was, what it excelled at giving, was a multitude of glimpses of what it felt like to live and work in Hollywood over the decades, by a very large number of people. By many screenwriters and directors in particular, from Frances Marion to Joan Didion, from Cecil De Mille to Sidney Lumet. As well as production executives and other executives, members of their families, visitors, journalists, a lawyer, a composer and so on, mostly from the major studios and major independents. (There were also actors and actresses, but too few from recent decades.) There were 138 works altogether, about three-fourths of them excerpts, by 117 people. The majority of authors were from the U.S., supplemented by a generous selection of writers from England. From France, Spain and the USSR, there were 1-2 selections each. The amount of reading done by the editor to compile this collection was extensive indeed.
