The book tells the story of Jim Wormold, an Englishman who lives in Havana, working as a vacuum cleaner salesman. After being abandoned by his wife, who had fled to Miami with another man, he finds serious financial problems raising his daughter, a beautiful seventeen-year-old girl, constantly courted by the local police captain, famous for the torture he inflicts on the rebels led by Fidel Castro. . At this juncture, Wormold is recruited by the British secret service and, seeing a source of income capable of solving his problems, he begins to invent situations and people as an excuse to request more and more money from the British government. Strangely, however, the lies begin to become reality, and what was once nothing more than an invention begins to come to fruition. Despite the historical background of the uprising that preceded the Cuban Revolution, it is practically not addressed, serving only as context. The work is, in fact, a satire, involving the dynamics of espionage and secret services, frequent themes in Greene's works.
