The catalogue *Waters’ Witness 01* is published to mark Tarek Atoui’s first solo exhibition at the Serralves Museum (February–August 2022).
The exhibition ‘Waters’ Witness’ is based on the ongoing project ‘I/E Tarek Atoui’, which began in 2015, in which the artist captures the sounds of port cities – Athens, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut and Porto – by recording the industrial, human and ecological activities taking place in their ports. To mark the occasion, the Serralves Museum has published, with the support of Galerie Chantal Crousel, the first two volumes dedicated to this ambitious and collaborative project, which seeks to explore the various ways of experiencing sound.
Together with the artist and filmmaker Eric La Casa, Tarek Atoui aims to capture the memory of water through sound: “In the case of *Testemunho da Água*, these sounds include voices: voices of lives at sea, lives made at sea and lives lost at sea.” Voices that narrate human history.
This publication includes a visual contribution by the photographer Alexandre Guirkinger, a rich collection of images from his solo exhibition at the Serralves Museum, and contributions by Maria-Thalia Carras and Filipa Loureiro.
