This fourth edition of what has become a standard text in the study of community recreation recognizes these changes and provides information which the authors hope will be helpful to the reader. And while the wealth of new material which has been added is applicable to the immediate present, it has also been weighed with an eye to the future.
The responsibility for organized recreation rests in the local community. Here recreation under public, private, and commercial auspices has its roots. In neighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, districts, and counties, organized recreation is closely associated with the people. Community planning and action are the order of the day. Community recreation is not spontaneous; it requires planning, organization, administration, development, and intelligent evaluation. It has been demonstrated repeatedly that community recreation, adequately and properly organized, contributes to the building of sound physical and mental health, to the molding of democratic citizenship and character, to the amelioration of delinquency and crime and other aspects...»
