Newgrange is one of the finest examples, not only in Ireland but in Western Europe, of the type of tomb known as a passage-grave.
Its probable date of erection is about 3200BC. It belongs to a time when stone, not metal, was the every-day material for tools and weapons. No metal has yet been found in a primary context in an Irish passage-grave.
Passage-graves are usually on hilltops or in commanding situations and are frequently grouped in cemeteries. Newgrange, in this respect, as in many others, is a classic example. It is situated on the highest point of a long, low ridge about 1km north of the river Boyne and about 14km from its mouth near the town of Drogheda, on the east coast. This town is about 50km north of Dublin.
