A scarce exhibition catalogue documenting José Maia’s London show, José Maia: Floods presents a powerful visual cycle by one of the most distinctive Portuguese painters of his generation. Published for the exhibition held at 8 Grosvenor Place, London, from 18 March to 11 April 1997, this softcover catalogue includes a brief preface by Ana de Castro, technical information, bibliography and colour reproductions of 50 exhibited works.
José Maia, born in Santo Tirso, Portugal, in 1959, studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, completed postgraduate studies at St Martin’s School of Art and earned a Master’s degree in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London. During his 15 years in London, he came into contact with artists such as Paula Rego, Francis Bacon and Peter Blake, and developed an international career marked by exhibitions, awards and a sustained investigation of painting.
This catalogue is particularly appealing to collectors of contemporary Portuguese art, London exhibition catalogues and rare artist publications. With its generous sequence of colour plates and its direct connection to a specific 1997 exhibition, José Maia: Floods is both a visual record and a collectible document. A fine opportunity to acquire a rare catalogue by a Portuguese artist with a significant international trajectory.
