An interesting bi-centennial guide to locations in Paris which have connections to French Revolution events.
The French Revolution was unquestionably the one period in history which aroused as much enthusiasm as it did censure. Passions and opinions ran high, either celebrating or condemning it en bloc.
This guide is just as much about the monuments that once were, and the places where they stood, as it is about those other visible signs of the Revolution which still haunt the streets of Paris. The description of each individual monument and site and of the events that took place there is accompanied by illustrations taken from old documents, paintings or prints, as well as by contemporary views which help us to identify what still exists as we wander through the city.
A historical introduction whose purpose is to recall the essential events of the Revolution in their chronological order is followed by a presentation of the places and monuments which witnessed them. To facilitate the visit, these have been classified and numbered in Iine with a continuous itinerary that is punctuated by the salient sites, such as the Bastille, Place de Grève, the Tuileries. Place de la Révolution, Champ de Mars, and the Conciergerie. To simplify the reading, these places have been grouped into districts, and each number set at the beginning of a text refers to the map at the end of the book, to at helping the visitor to know exactly where each monument is to be found.
Lastly, a dictionary of the personages cited in the text furnishes general synopsis of the life of each one and the part they played in the politics and history of the Revolution.
