Chronicle of the Berlin Wall.
The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It began with barbed-wire fencing erected on August 13th, 1961, land-locking West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and East Berlin.
Over time the fencing became concrete walls painted white -- an ideal painting surface for artists and writers this photographic essay preserves.
The Wall stood until 1990, paving the way for German reunification formally concluded on 3 October 1990.
