It is Kay Scarpetta’s birthday and a well-deserved vacation awaits.

Suddenly, Dr. Scarpetta catches a glimpse of something shinning on a wall in her house.

She realizes that they are coins: perfectly minted coins minted in the year 1981, the year her niece, Lucy, was born.
